June 19, 2019 Guest Speaker: Larry Scott – B-47 Days – Cold War Training and Missions

Larry’s presentation will cover the training mission and methods for the Boeing B-47 Stratojet, the game-changing bomber that entered service with the US Air Force in 1951. Many practice bomb runs were made over coastal California waters and the bomb range in Arizona. The mission flights were north towards the USSR per Strategic Air Command strategy. They used celestial navigation in those days before GPS and inertial navigation. SAC Commander General Lemay would visit bases often and Larry accidentally had a personal run-in with him. Chuck Yeager was also part of the base reviews, but mostly for training to avoid the GE engines’ “coffin corner” operating region. Come and find out why Larry calls this a great period of his life and why he would do it a million times more!

About Larry Scott

Larry was born in 1930 in Junction City, Oregon. After attending the University of Oregon and receiving a BS in General Science (a prerequisite for dental school), he entered the US Air Force at the age of 22. His first assignment after earning his wings was B-29 training , but he was soon reassigned to the new B-47 Stratojet in General Curtis Lemay’s SAC squadrons. After the Air Force, Larry went to dental school and set up practice in Santa Rosa. When he retired from dentistry, he spent 12 years as Assistant to the Wine Maker (aka cellar rat) for Chateau St. Jean Winery.

Air Show Meeting at 6:30 immediately before the Member Meeting

The 2019 Wings Over Wine Country Air Show is being planned!

Each month we have an open Air Show meeting, just before the monthly Member Meeting. We talk about performers, volunteers, staffing, vendors, attractions, and all the other important things that go into an event like this.

These meetings are your chance to find out what’s happening, get a look at the plans, and contribute your own opinions and ideas. We encourage you to attend.

The Air Show meetings take place at 6:30 p.m. and run through about 7:00 p.m., and are in the same room as the Member Meetings.
