Our Mission Statement
Founded in 1989, the Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) is a
non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the
acquisition, restoration, safe operation and display of
historical aircraft and provides an educational venue for
students and the community. We also intend to honor those
heroic aviators who have contributed so much to the growth
and defense of our way of life.
The Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) had been an idea in the
minds of several aircraft owners at Sonoma County Airport
for many years. The first museum meeting was held at the
base of the Air Traffic Control Tower at Sonoma County
Airport on February 4, 1990. Approximately 21 people
attended, representing 16 different aircraft that qualified
as historic.
Our first Open House was on May 26, 1990. We have held an
Open House and/or Air Show every year since, enabling the
community to view our growing collection of aircraft and
artifacts, to visit displays, and to see aerial
demonstrations and become more aware of our rich aviation
history. During our Open Houses and Air Shows our museum has
hosted Top Gun instructors, Navy/Air Force/Marine pilots,
crewmembers, and aircraft, and war bird veterans and
aircraft. A NASA astronaut participated in our 2006 “Wings
Over Wine Country” Air Show. The Air Shows have been so
successful and well received that our annual August “Wings
Over Wine Country” Air Show now draws over 20,000 visitors
to our two-day Air Show each year. Our Air Show has become a
world-class event featuring everything from military jet
demo teams to skydiving, and hang-gliding to biplane
aerobatics and top performers who attract large crowds of
aviation enthusiasts.
Our first museum aircraft acquisition was a Douglas A-26
Invader restoration project. Next, the F-8C Crusader was
retrieved from Larsen Park on 19th Avenue in San Francisco
where it had been sitting derelict for many years. It is now
proudly displayed, on its feet, in the original Navy paint
scheme. In June 1994, a Navy A-6E Intruder flew in to join
the collection; and just before the open house that August,
we flew in our Ilyushin IL-14 Light Transport from Reno,
Nevada, where it had been restored to flight status by our
members. In January 1995, we added a Navy Top Gun School
F-16N Viper from Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar. Since
then, an F-4C Phantom II was trucked in from the Army
Weapons Depot, Herlong, California.; an F-14A was flown in
from NAS Point Mugu, California.; an A-4E Skyhawk was
retrieved from Davis Monthan AFB, Arizona.; and a UH-1H Huey
helicopter was retrieved from the California National Guard
in Sacramento, California.
In 1997 the museum acquired a rare RF-86F Sabre from China
Lake Weapons Test Center, CA. The museum also acquired F-84F
Thunderstreak and F-86H Sabre fighters.
In 1999, our museum acquired an HU-16E Albatross from a
private donor and a F-105 Thunderchief from the Army Weapons
Depot, Herlong, California. In 2004 we added an F-106,
dedicated to Major General Jimmy Jumper and Colonel Joe
Rogers. In 2005 we added an F-5E Tiger II and in 2006 we
acquired and restored a rare AV-8C Harrier. Additional
aircraft include T-33, T-37 and T-38 Air Force trainer
aircraft. Our latest addition is a beautiful Pitts 2-C
Special. A California Department of Forestry (CDF) S-2
aircraft for our collection is scheduled to arrive shortly
and we are currently fully restoring a T-28C aircraft.
Our HU-16E Albatross, dedicated in October 1999, is used as
a demonstration classroom for young enthusiasts. Museum
docents conduct active educational tours for thousands of
Sonoma County school children each year. Our Air Museum
provides an educational outreach program to schools and is
open for climb-aboards, field trips and special
presentations. We also host birthday parties for children on
our beautiful east patio, near our aircraft displays.
In addition to aircraft, the museum continues to acquire
donations of aviation-related display material, reference
books, display engines and assorted historical artifacts.
Our display areas are housed in an original World War II era
fabrication shop at the Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County
Airport. Volunteers have refurbished this building over the
years and the museum recently added an annex to house the
growing number of aviation displays and to provide
classroom, office and meeting space.
The Pacific Coast Air Museum is very active in community
events. Our organization participates in Santa Rosa’s annual
Rose Parade, puts on a Santa Claus “fly in” each December,
hosts veteran’s groups, reunions and provides community
service opportunities for high schools. The museum is also
involved in, and supports EAA, CDF, Reach, the Sheriff’s
helicopter, several Chambers of Commerce, local tourism
organizations, the Civil Air patrol, Boy Scouts and many
other civic groups. In addition the museum provides speakers
for civic groups.
The Pacific Coast Air Museum is planning a major fund
raising drive to build a larger, more permanent Air Museum
in a new location on the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County
Airport.
