SMSgt Larry Rengstorf, C-118 Liftmaster Crew Chief

SMSgt Larry Rengstorf was born December 17, 1936 in Winter, Wisconsin. His family and Larry moved to Wyoming and Colorado in his teens. He attended high school in Granby, Colorado and Bruce, Wisconsin, graduating in 1954. He entered the Air Force from Saratoga, Wyoming in 1957. Upon completion of 11 weeks of basic training at Lackland AFB Texas and then Aircraft Mechanic Technical school at Sheppard AFB Texas, he was assigned to the 1503 Flight Line Maintenance Squadron at Tachikawa AB Japan. There he worked on C-135, C-133, C-124, C-121, C-118, C-97, C-54, C-47 and C-46 aircraft, becoming a Crew Chief on C-124 Globemasters. Upon his completion of that tour, with an extension for the Cuban Crisis, Larry was assigned to Stewart AFB NY as a C-123 and T-33 Crew Chief.

After a short stint in the civilian workforce, at E.I. DuPont in Newburgh, NY - missing the military and needing a better paying job, he joined the Air Force Reserves at Stewart AFB, NY, working on C-119s and then C-124s. In 1968 the unit was recalled to Active Duty for the Pueblo Crisis and went to Mildenhall England, where he flew on C-124s throughout Europe. Upon their return in 1969 the 904 MAG was transferred with their C-124s to Hamilton AFB CA, because of the Stewart AFB closure. His maintenance career continued as he helped the 904 MAG convert to C-130B aircraft in 1972 at Hamilton AFB. In 1975, Hamilton also closed, transferring the 904/452nd to March AFB CA. Larry then gave up his Air Reserve Technician position and went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration. At that time he also joined the 129 Air Rescue
Group of the California Air National Guard at Hayward Airport CA as a week-ender Crew Chief on HC-130Ps. He stayed in the unit for the next 14 years participating in many missions and numerous rescues.
