Now that's a Rudder

The massive, brand new rudder weighs almost 1,000 pounds. It is plastic and composite and has one of the first radar absorbant paints.  The SR-71 has two of these huge vertical stabilizers, mounted 2/3 of the way back on a spindle. Our rudder displays the SR-71 serial number 17953, the tail number our Pacific Coast Air Museum member, the late Colonel Joe Rogers ejected safely out of in 1969 over Death Valley. It also bears the Beale Air Force Base 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing patch, the patch of our other SR-71 pilot, former 9th SRW Wing Commander and Pacific Coast Air Museum Executive Director, Colonel Dave Pinsky.
